Wings of War WW II Night!

Monday July 18 two brave TSGOGgers donned their flight gear climb aboard their kites and hit the air! Over to Dave...

FLt 'Whizzo' Al in his trusty Hurricane did battle with Leutnant 'Schmutzy' von N in the Me109 over the green fields of Kent. Through head on passes and deflection shooting from interlocking S-Turns the Hurrys multiple 303s delivered the goods. In the first sortie the 109 carried 16 out of the required 17 hits for a few turns before disintegrating. Undeterred; Schmutzy eluded the home guard and swam back to Calais for sortie 2 where the first burst of Whizzos 303s gave 8 hits (ach these Englanders fight like madmen!) and the 2nd burst had one of those darn explosion chits. For Schmutzy it's PoW life with incessant rain, bad plumbing, bread and dripping...

A couple of pics from the night!

Wings of War WW I Session

Last night two intrepid TSOGgers donned goggles and silk scarves strapped into their fragile fabric and wood airplanes and took to the skies over France circa 1917!

Using one of favourite sets of rules Al and Dave spent an entertaining evening engaging in some serious dog fighting...in the end in gentlemanly spirit it was decided it was a draw between the Entente and Central Powers!

Some pictures from the night...great model's on Alan's great home made terrain mat!

Well we really need to catch up on the Blog there are several game pictures sitting on our phones! Plus I need to address Captain darling's Blog, I have several things to post there just been a tad busy with 'real' life! Catch ya all soon!

WW I Wings of War/Glory Session...

Monday night due to Covid19 Quarantining we met at Dave's place, Great War Wings of War/Glory was on the agenda! The beauty of Wings of War/Glory is the playtime, we got three games in on the night and plenty of time for coffee/tea after! So each of us had a go as the bomber force!

The Mission;

A Caproni Ca.3 with a Nieuport 17 had to carry out a bombing run over a town AND return to the entry area.
Three German planes were tasked with shooting down the Caproni, two Albatrosses and a Halberstadt comprised their force.

The Outcome;

Game 1 Entente Victory
Game 2 Central Powers Victory
Game 3 Entente Victory

Some Pictures;

Very enjoyable! For some variety we had some random cloud movement this time and it worked well, the clouds movement was controlled by a scatter die and and D3 (six sided die with result divided by 2 rounded up).

WW II Wings of War/Glory Session

Monday night under Al's watchful eye we had a WW II Wings of Glory session!

This was a warm up for our next gaming night when we'll play some bombing scenarios as a reminder of the rules. We usually play WW I games with these rules and there are some significant differences between the two.

After a counter sort out Al and I boarded our Messeschmitts, Dave his Hurricane and George his Spitfire and it was chocks away!

Results at the end of Play were...

Pete shot down twice
George shot down once
Al shot down once
Dave not shot down

...so that's 2, 1, 1 and 0 which means I won I think!?!?!

Oh and Al supplied the excellent terrain boards and Dave dressed appropriately for the night in his old RAAF gear and the rest of us didn't!

Tripods and Triplanes - First Play AAR

Posted for Al, our first try at Tripods and Triplanes!

A Desperate Defence!

Two aircraft were all that could be spared to defend the village of Zwiderhof and its vital munitions factory from the unstoppable Martian Tripods. A Fokker Dr1 and an ageing Albatross took to the skies in the early hours before dawn to seek out and, if nothing else, delay the alien invaders.

Armed with machine guns and these new French rockets, the two aircraft gained altitude in order to have the sun behind them as they approached their patrol zone. The pilots waved cheerfully to each other as they crossed the Oder River. Both knew what awaited them.

A plume of smoke rose from the Western horizon, and a glint of sunlight off a metal surface gave the pilots a clear idea where their targets were. They both increased the throttle and darted to the attack.

Two massive machines towered over the landscape, plodding in their unworldly three-legged gait towards the village. The closest was one of the type dubbed the 'Locust' and it definitely had an insect-like appearance. Leutnant Reim of der Deutsche Luftstreitkräfte banked his Fokker left to make an approach, guns blazing. The metal skin on the Martian machine seemed to sparkle as the bullets struck, doing no damage.

The fragile aircraft attacking the Martian Tripods!

The second Martian, a larger machine known as a 'Scarab', turned its attention towards the incoming aircraft. A sudden flare of light and the Dr 1 was engulfed in an intense blast of heat from the alien's forward projector.  Deft manoeuvring on the part of Lt Reim saw him fly through and carry on the fight, but he was severely wounded in the blast.

A Martian Tripod deploys 'Black Smoke'...

The Martians steadily destroyed their objectives, one by one, troubled little by the German flyers. Rockets and machine guns could not seem to penetrate the armour of these mechanical monsters. But then, a lucky shot by Hauptman Kremb in the Albatross caused an explosion in the power plant of the Locust and the Martian machine collapsed in a ball of flame.

Lt Kremb soars passed the remains of a Martian Fighting Machine...

Emboldened by this success, the German pilots renewed their attacks, but the wounds suffered by Lt Reim, together with a choking lung full of Black Smoke from the remaining Martian saw him spiral into the ground. Posthumously awarded the Iron Cross with oak leaves, Lt Reim was survived by his wife Greta and six children.

Never giving up the fight, Kremb struck again and again, but to no avail. The remaining Martian, despite once tumbling to the ground, destroyed all its objectives and marched relentlessly towards the German lines, pursued by the single remaining German aircraft.

Lt Kremb was awarded the Iron Cross Second Class and a Wound Badge in recognition of his efforts at the time...

The game ends with the surviving Martian Tripod advances remorselessly...

This was our first foray into Tripods and Triplanes, the War of the Worlds expansion to Ares Games' Wings of Glory. Dave and Pete controlled the tripods and George defended humanity as the German player. Al acted as referee while we learned the rules. It was a fun game and we mostly played it correctly. Some confusion was had over how rockets work but our interpretation turned out to be correct. Next time, the game play will flow faster as we will be a bit more familiar with the new rules covering Martians

Certainly a worthwhile investment and a fun expansion to an already-excellent game

Wings of Glory/War Night - WW II!

After a Little Wars game overload we decided to ease back into our Monday nights so out came the Wings of War planes! This time we moved into the WW II era! Also Al rolled out his excellent modular terrain mats!

We just played some dog fight games as we hadn't played for ages, I picked an early war Spitfire, Al a Messerschmitt bf109E and Dave a Zero.

Game 1 Dave exceeded his damage on the same turn I drew an explosion damage chit the 109 ruled the skies!

Game 2 My Spit got damage from both the 109 and the Zero and went down, Al then got the better of Dave destroying the Zero.

So score wise the night ended with the below victory counts
Japan 2 victories the Spit in both Games!
Germany 1 victory the Zero Game 2
Britain 1 victory the Zero Game 1

Some pics...

Though we only played 2 games over the night due to discussion on our Little Wars experiences we found the WW II version of play definitely benefits from altitude and optional rules which for the WW II.

Next time we'll be visiting the PTO theatre, WW II!

Wings of War Custom Playing Surface

After seeing the impressive WoW/WoG game at Little Wars Melbourne in 2018 Al decided he would try his deft hand at creating his own. It turned out great!

Just like the one at Little Wars he used modular flooring tiles available cheaply at Hardware shops and created this...

Champion Work I must say! We're looking forward to christening this playing surface! That will be after Little Wars Adelaide unfortunately as our next two catch ups prior to the big day will be to play through the games we are hosting on the day...

Chain of Command; Guadalcanal – Battle of Edson’s Ridge

FUBAR VSF; War of the Worlds – Martian Attack!

There is a tutorial for creating these playmats here but you will need to join the Facebook Group to access it...

Wings of Glory Again!

Last fortnight we dragged out the WoW WW I aircraft collection and the three of us donned our flying caps, goggles, scarves and fake moustaches and 'set off into the wild blue yonder...'

We played a couple of free for all games to get into the rules, a Sopwith Camel, an Albatross and a SPAD maneouvered around the tabletop going at each other!

Game 1 the SPAD triumphed.
Game 2 no one won! Last turn saw the 2 Camels shoot each other down going head to head!

Then out came the Gotha! We each gad a go at crossing the table top flying the Gotha against two Camels!

Game 1 ended with an exploding Gotha, the Camels took quite a bit of damage!

Game 2 ended in the second Gotha blowing up as well this time the camels took light damage.

Game 3 and the Gotha made it! One camel was shot down in the action.

Next time we have a WoW night I'll read up the trench, ground fire and bombing rules and we'll try those!

Keep gaming!

Wings Of Glory Session 2

Well this fortnight with the Wings of Glory rules fresh in our heads we spent another night soaring over the trenches of the western front thumbing our noses at fellow knights of the sky and watching for the 'Hun in the Sun' all while wearing silly cotton wool moustaches!
We started the gaming with a two plane each free for all and then ran the 'Catch that Gotha' scenario three times so each one of us had a chance to fly of the Hun bomber against two Sopwith Camels, that went two games to one in favour of the British!
In the true spirit of the night Alan brought a pack of Pods Chocolates so we could all say..."Chocks Away!" is silly british accents! Here you'll see if our free for all game my Fokker Dr1 is the first of the six planes in action down!

At this point of the free for all I was the rules man as both my planes were out of action and Alan was one plane to Dave's two..uh oh!

We will go back to these rules again in the future as I have the large Zeppelin and Handley Page bombers and we want to give them a spin!
This Monday night as it's the Queen's Birthday Public Holiday we shall be going with the 'Queenie' theme and all dress up as dowdy old ladies no no no...I mean we'll play a (Queen) Victoria(n) Science Fiction game with the veritable FUBAR VSF rules while supping on Corgi Kebabs and sipping sherry!

Wings Of Glory Session

Well I don't know how many clichés were coined during the night nor do I know if the cotton wool moustaches we all wore were passed by OH&S standards but I can say a good time was had by all as our little biplanes/triplanes criss crossed the table top attempting to shoot each other out of the sky!

We played two three player free for all games with two planes each and Dave was the last man standing in both of those.

Then we played a game where a Gotha bomber had to fly the length of our table and survive the attention of two Sopwith Camels. We were too lazy to read the bombing rules on the night so we went with this scenario! Stu manoeuvred the Gotha with great skill but just fell short of his objective when he drew the 'explosion' damage card within inches of succeeding! We Brits discovered afterwards the Gotha took engine damage early on so was in effect limping about the table, without that handicap I suspect it would have cruised the length of our table much quicker and could well have escaped its rather nasty fate!

This was only the second time Dave and I had played these rules and they are pretty easy to come to grips with. We had a few confused orders with a couple of cards from different plane decks played against the wrong planes and a couple of discrepancies on plane placement when retracing steps but all in all this was good beer and pretzels gaming! In all honesty I think the old Blue Max game does this better and I wonder if I should get a large printed hex grid to play those rules but using the great WoW and WoG miniatures??? Anyway we're going to read up more on the Wings of Glory rules over the next two weeks and try this game  again next fortnight to see how it goes now we have a little experience under our belts!

Here's a few pictures from the night...

I held off on posting the picture with us all posing wearing our cotton wool moustaches!
